Maps and Graphs

Sheet 2(1).png

This graph demonstrates the amount of evidence found in trials, diaries, newspapers and other sources on whether or not a pirate either had slaves or patrticipated in the slave trade.

Sheet 1 with slave trade.jpg

Map of where pirates were either caught or died.  The large lines is the typical paths of where the majority of the transatlantic slave trade occured.

The data to the left in the graph shows 24 different pirates that have been compiled from primary sources.  If the the source states anything about refusing slaves or letting men go, the pirate was listed under "no" for evidence.  If no evidence either way was found, it is listed as unknown.  If any evidence found as to prove any participation in slave trade, it is listed as a yes. There are many pirates missing from this list, and as more data is compiled, the chart will be updated.  Hopefully soon, data will be added as to where each incident of slaves being stolen from ships or pirates caught with slaves will be added.  This may be in graph form or in a map, depending which displays the data better.

Below this graph is a map of the transatlantic slave trade, which is the large black lined in area, alongside colored dots.  Those little dots show where different pirates were caught or died.  This map is certainly not complete, nor did all the data appear properly on the map.  Some of the data shows it a bit off, which is the way of technology sometimes.  The point of this map is to show the correlation between the location of pirates and the transatlantic slave trade.  You may need to click on the image to open it, and click again to access it at a larger size to view.

Also available is an interactive map of just where pirates were caught or died. One can hover their mouse over the location on the map to see which pirate either died or was captured in which location.  Some locations are where the pirate was hung or put to death, as it may be unclear where they were captured.
